Spring Cleaning

I'm so over winter and ready for spring. It's still quite cold here, and we're still bundling up in wool and snow suits with plenty of snow on the ground. Yet, we're opening the windows a bit during the day to air out the house. I'm tired of the stuffiness of a house shut up for winter. I'm ready to do a declutter, purge, and thorough spring cleaning! Care to join me?

Spring Cleaning at Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers

I usually spend a week purging, a week deep cleaning, a week organizing and a week on the miscellaneous repairs or special projects. I divide the house up into zones to tackle on each day, and always give myself a day off each week to take a break and enjoy. This month I am also planning a birthday party for my daughter on the 13th, so I need to leave myself enough time to get that done.

I'll be deep cleaning the entire house, however these are the areas that I plan on concentrating on this year that I know need a little extra help.

For purging: closets, linens, my drawers, and the kitchen.
For cleaning: electronics, the stove, doors & windows, soft furnishings & textiles, registers & grates
For organizing: miscellaneous drawer, pantry, bathroom closets, front hall closet, garage (tall order)
Special project: create a guest room/craft room out the bedroom in the basement and finish the bathroom in the basement

My zones this spring (I'm going from least amount of work to be done to most):
Monday: Bathrooms
Tuesday: Dining Room(s) (formal/casual/kitchen dining rooms)
Wednesday: Living Room(s) (living/family/game/rec rooms)
Thursday: Bedrooms
Friday: Other Room(s) (hall closets, foyers, mud room, laundry room)
Saturday: Kitchen
Sunday: Family Fun Day!

If you'd like to jump around and do your own thing, but are looking for some sort of guide, check out the September ShapeUp Guide from a few years ago. I do a bit of a mini "spring cleaning" in the fall as well to get ready for the holidays and get all the summer bits put away and pull out all the cozier things we need for fall and winter here. Otherwise, join along here and on Facebook.

Taking Care of the Little Things

It's been a busy and interesting week, I spent last night setting up a Facebook page for the blog. I know quite a few people like to track their blogs through Facebook these days instead of traditional readers.

Like Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers on Facebook... Pretty please.

Kirsten LOVES to push the buttons on the front of the dishwasher, and we usually keep it slightly ajar so she doesn't start it accidentally. So she was pushing buttons and somehow turned on the child lock. Child lock... brilliant! Except I had no idea how to turn it on or off, so I got to spend some time the other night trying to figure out how to turn the child lock off. Bonus to this though is I now know how to turn it on!

After I went through the two closets, I spent some time this week taking care of a few little things and spots around my house that have been driving me crazy for a while. It's funny how many times I'll look at something and it'll bother me, but I think I don't have time to take care of it right that moment. It turns out some of these things took me less than 5 minutes to deal with from start to finish. LESS THAN 5 MINUTES??? Why, oh why, didn't I take care of them sooner? They're minor, trivial things, but it's still nice to get them done. A dear bloggy friend of mine, Susan, wrote about this very thing this week. I wonder if there is something in the air, or perhaps the season? I read her post and knew EXACTLY how she felt. I feel a little less stuck today though, than I did on Monday. Hopefully I can keep going for a while, I still have a few BIG projects to accomplish this spring.

Getting the little things off my mental list felt as good as getting the big things done. So if you have 5 minutes, maybe tackle the small pile of papers, or the phone dumping ground, or the little table in the entry or the pile of shoes, or whatever little thing has been bugging you for a while. When you are done, come back and share a cup of coffee with me... we'll chat a while.

Spring Cleaning Motivation

It's been approximately 8 years since we moved into this house. This is the longest I've ever lived in one house, I believe the previous record was approximately 3.5 years give or take a couple of months. Spring cleaning has always been fairly easy for me as a result, I mean things hadn't had a chance to accumulate without getting a good purge due to moving. In this house though, the closets are starting to bulge a bit. I finally had enough of the catch-all drawer in the kitchen, it had been three years since I had last cleaned it out and it was worse than last time, significantly so. It was great for about two and a half years or so, then thanks to a mad dash clean up before last Thanksgiving a bunch of stuff had been shoved into it. Well as most of us know clutter breeds more clutter, when we couldn't get to the organized containers below more things got dropped in anywhere it would fit until it was a disaster. So, I finally broke down and purged it again, no pictures this time though.

I have three hall closets in similar states of clutter breeding catastrophe, and a basement and garage that I really need to go through.

The closets really need to have everything pulled out, walls painted, organizing shelves and possibly rods put in... depending on the closet. For some accountability, I'm going to do a public to-do list and share before and after pictures as I go.  I'll break the garage into sections and the basement into sections, otherwise they'll just sit on the list until close to the end of the month.

  • Front Hall Closet - I'd love to add shelves to add some pantry space for a few things we buy in bulk
  • Back Hall Closet - Needs a better shoe storage solution than kick them off onto the floor of the closet
  • Game/Sewing Closet - Wow, just a big mess right now
  • Garage - Gardening/Storage Side - just needs cleaning and organizing
  • Garage - Tool/Workshop Side - needs better storage
  • Garage - Front End - this should be cleared out completely

Actually, realistically this is going to take all month, so I'll probably have to do the basement in May.  Just in case I can start it earlier though, I'll break it down

  • Laundry Room - needs organizing and cleaning
  • Utility/Storage Room - needs organizing and cleaning
  • Rec Room Area - needs serious purging, organizing and cleaning
  • Paul's Den - needs organizing and cleaning
  • Bathroom - Drywall prep, painting, molding, vanity and toilet installed
  • Storage Closet - purging and organizing, maybe install shelving

Are you spring cleaning at all? What projects are you working on?

Spring Cleaning Checklist

I
've been busy with so many little things that I haven't gotten a chance to get started on my spring cleaning. I'm getting started this week, definitely won't be done by the first day of spring! However, I'm hoping by the end of March.

I also put the list in my left sidebar, I'll mark off as I complete items there. I only have a few hours after work during the week and I need some me and blogging time as well, so don't expect too much to get done on weekdays!

Spring Cleaning

I
'll be spring cleaning inside the house this month with hopes to have everything done inside by the first day of Spring. The outdoors will get a thorough cleaning out once all my snow melts. Twice a year I go through the house cleaning up, airing out and changing decor. Every September I go through a nesting phase, get everything cozy for the fall and winter. Each March I'm eager to air out the house, shed the heavier fabrics and lighten the decor and palette.

In the meantime, I have a few questions for you.

1) Do you spring clean?
2) Do you dedicate a certain amount of time? If so, how long?
3) When do you usually start? finish?
4) Do you give the house a thorough going through, or do you just do things as you think they need it throughout the year?
5) Do you stick to cleaning, or do you also organize and/or change out decor?

And because spring cleaning makes me feel all housewifey, and I'm in a silly mood...

Clean the Bathrooms and Laundry

What's the Homemaking September ShapeUp! all about?

Bathroom

All week we've been cleaning, and today it's time to tackle the bathrooms and laundry. When it comes to the bathrooms, I have a routine that works so well that I really don't ever have to CLEAN the bathroom. It just sort of happens.

Ok, obviously it doesn't just happen, I wish... but since I wrote about my bathroom routine a while back, and it's what I actually do, I'm just going to link it up. It sounds like a lot, it probably took me more time to write it up than it takes to do it.

So, go look through the bathroom routine, but don't forget to come back for the laundry room!

The laundry room is a lot like the bathroom, give it a quick wipe every time you are in there and it's a lot easier. The towels that you brought down from the laundry, give the floor a quick wipe before throwing them in the wash.

Grab the cleaning supplies. This is the deep cleaning list that I do, feel free to modify it to suit your home. This keeps me on track and makes sure I don't miss anything. I only do a deep clean twice a year, usually I do the quick clean. Other steps in the deep clean area are done as needed.

My Deep Clean List:
Put away everything that stays in the room.
Clear furniture surfaces, and put items for other rooms in the put away bin.
Put any dirty clothes in the hamper and clean clothes in the laundry basket.
Wipe down light fixtures.
Spray down the washer and dryer with a non-bleaching cleaner and wipe down. Don't want to put wet clothes on top later and find traces of a bleaching agent have turn them a new color in places.
Spray down all other non-wood hard finishes, and wipe down.
Wash windows, glass and mirror surfaces.
With a new cloth wipe down all wood surfaces with wood cleaner/conditioner.
Wipe down the walls, outlets, doorknobs and light switches.
Wipe down any shelves or cabinets.
One drawer at a time, pull items out, wipe down drawer, put everything back.
Open cabinets and wipe down the shelves.
Wipe down any decorative items.
Vacuum behind the dryer and anywhere lint may have accumulated.
Move appliances out of the way.
Vacuum the floors and around the edges.
If you have hard floor surfaces, wash them.
Move your appliances back in place.

My Quick Clean List:
Put away clutter.
Wipe down hard surfaces.
Wash shower curtains and towels.
Wipe down doorknobs and light switches.
Put away all the clothes and linens.
Clean glass and mirror surfaces.
Vacuum up lint.
Clean floors.

Office

Monday we cleaned the kitchen, Tuesday we cleaned the dining room and entrances, Wednesday we cleaned the living areas, yesterday we cleaned the bedrooms, today we're going to clean the extra rooms in the house; office, craft room, studio, sewing room, exercise room, guest room, whatever the spare rooms are used for.

Again, we will take the bins and trash bag with us, since it's been a week. However, the focus is cleaning this week, with a focus on deep cleaning. I'll also share my quick clean lists. Don't dwell on just 1 item, don't get sidetracked. We are not organizing this week, we'll do that next week.

The extra rooms list is basically the same as the living areas, but a lot of it is going to depend on how you use them. My extra room is my library/office and an exercise area.

Grab the cleaning supplies. This is the deep cleaning list that I do, feel free to modify it to suit your home. This keeps me on track and makes sure I don't miss anything. I only do a deep clean twice a year, usually I do the quick clean. Other steps in the deep clean area are done as needed.

How Do I Clean?

What's the Homemaking September ShapeUp! all about?

This week I'm deep cleaning the house, I'll share my daily/weekly routines, plus my deep cleaning check lists.

I always work from top to bottom, so vacuuming/sweeping is done last. There is reasoning behind this, as you clean items, the dirt or dust will drop or drift down. If you start by vacuuming, as you clean, the furniture the floors will just get dusty and dirty again.

I rotate through my house starting in my least used rooms, then through to the most used room, so:
Living Room
Foyer
Dining Room
Nursery
Library
Guest Bathroom
Master Bathroom
Master Vanity/Closet
Master Bedroom
Hallways
Stairs
Family Room
Dinette
Kitchen

This way I'm not tracking anything from more frequently used rooms into the lesser used rooms. This will vary for your home, but the concept should be the same.

In each room work from top to bottom, for each area we'll go through the quick clean and the deep clean checklist throughout the week. Until then, here's a general overview:

Cleaning Items

Cleaning supply check list:
All Purpose Cleaner (mine works well on glass and mirrors)
Wood Conditioner
Soft Cleaning Cloths
Fabric and/or Air Freshener (Optional)
Floor Cleaner for Hard Floors
Vacuum Cleaner
Trash Bag and 2 Bins (Decluttering Tools)
Laundry Basket

A lot of people swear by feather dusters, this is why I don't. I own a feather duster, and I do use it for quick dusting from time to time. However, if I'm REALLY cleaning, this is why I don't use one. This is from my shelf which gets the dustiest, it's near electronics and all the static electricity is like a dust magnet. The feather duster picked up a lot, but not everything. It's hard to get a camera to focus on white, so it actually even looks worse in person. Upper left corner of the cloth:
After Feather Duster

Quick clean overview:
Throw all the trash away
Put any linens in the room in the laundry basket
Pick up all items in the room
Put any items that belong in another room in 1 of the bins to put away
Put any items you are going to sell or donate in the other bin
Wipe down all non wood hard surfaces with 1 cloth and all purpose cleaner
Wipe down all wood surfaces with a different cloth and wood conditioner
Vacuum all soft surfaces (furniture)
Vacuum the floor
Vacuum around the edges with the edge tool
Wash the floor, if hard surface

Homemaking: Songs for Cleaning

What's the Homemaking September ShapeUp! all about?

I added a playlist of upbeat songs to the playlist in my side bar. Tamy contributed Flashdance and Main Event, however I couldn't find Main Event available online. However, this isn't all about me! So, do you have any additional suggestions? I want any and all suggestions! I'll add songs that most people would know to the playlist, if I can find them online.

Now, here's the thing, I LOVE finding new music, and this playlist isn't my typical cleaning playlist. My actual list is so random. The very first song I put on the list is an example of them, I put it first so you can skip it if you want to. So in the interest of full disclosure, and transparency, here's the list of songs in my actual cleaning playlist, yes, it's long! I play it on random:

Just a Few Things

First, took some time to update my blog roll, I've found a few new blogs recently and hadn't added them yet. Not because I don't love them or check them daily! So take a quick peek if you want.

Second, inspired by a conversation with Monique, I'm going to start featuring some of my frequent commenters and my favorite blogs each week. I started using EntreCard a while back and decided that I'm willing to give a little advertising space to complete strangers, I should do it for my friends too. So, as the inspiration, Monique will be first. It'll take a while to get around to everyone, give me time :)

Third, along with all the blog maintenance I'm doing some house maintenance. Next month, all month, I'll be having a get our house in shape month, with special tasks to do each day, household planners, recipe planning and tips from Tamy. I am trying to get back into my routines, because life is so much easier when they are in place. I'm looking forward to it and I hope you are too.

My Cleaning Tips : Bathroom

Jen at Absolutely Bananas asked for Housekeeping Tips. Well, I have plenty, I have tips compiled from years of FlyLady and every other housekeeping guru out there including Martha, Cheryl Mendelson (my favorite!), Sandra Felton, Abigal Van Buren, Ann Landers, and many others... While I have tons and tons and tons of tips, how many of them really work? Well, different tips work for different people, but this is what keeps my bathrooms clean and presentable with the least amount of effort on my part:

Bathroom Cleaning Tips | Candy Hearts and Paper Flowers

Cleaning is always more time consuming when you have to work around things, so put every away first. In my case, I have individual containers in the bathroom drawers and instead of keeping toothbrushes and toothpaste on the counter, I keep it in a container in the drawer. If you have no other option but to have items out on your counter, try to corral it all in a tray or basket so you can just move 1 tray instead of multiple individual things. If possible, to keep the container clean, line the tray or basket with a handtowel or washcloth, so whenever you change out your towels, you can change out the handtowel as well.

A few things I've done that makes my life much easier:
My shower curtain liner is a nylon fabric rather than plastic, it is easier to keep clean and washes well in the washing machine, it has lasted for 4 years so far. (I got mine at Bed, Bath & Beyond, but you can buy them other places as well.)

My toilet brush has a ceramic container that I keep 3" in the bottom of water with antibacterial cleaner in it. I rinse it out and replace it once a week or so. I keep one of these in each bathroom. (This is not a good idea if your kids are toddlers that would get into this!)

I keep a spray bottle of cleaner and a cleaning rag (really cheap washcloths!) under the sink in the bathroom, and something to scrub with (I like coarse cheap scrubbing mitts) in the shower. You want 2 of each of these per bathroom so you can swap out easily, and they are always right where you need them. Also, a spray bottle of ShowerShine (or water with vinegar) by the shower. If the items you need to clean aren't conveniently available, it's easy to skip it.

My cleaning arsenal, (top) things that make my life easier, (bottom) my cheap cleaning tools (the cheaper, the coarser, the better):

Cleaning Arsenal

Every day (about 25 seconds!):
Scrub down 1 wall of the shower/tub (I keep a scrubber in the shower and it gets thrown in the wash with the towels), each day moving to the next wall, then do the tub bottom, then all the ledges, the all the fixtures (faucet, drain, etc.), then all the containers in the shower. Start over again the next week. It takes about 10 seconds and the entire tub is cleaned each week with minimal effort.
Spray down the walls of the shower/tub with some sort of ShowerShine or water/vinegar solution each day. (5 seconds)
Wipe down the sink after I'm done using it with that days washcloth. (5 seconds)
Use the toilet brush to scrub around the bowl (5 seconds)

Whenever you swap out towels:
Throw all your towels and washclothes and shower scrubby in the basket. (15 seconds)
While all your surfaces and fixtures are empty, grab your rag and spray and quickly spray down all the surfaces. I use a multi-purpose antibacterial spray that can be used on everything: mirrors, faucets, counters, toilet tank and seat, etc. Let the cleaner sit about a minute. (if you have more than 1 bathroom, go spray down the other bathrooms now too, it lets the cleaner sit a bit and do the work for you)
Now go back and wipe everything down, starting with the mirror, then the towel bar... finishing at the toilet tank, then seat, then bowl. Basically you want to move from the cleanest and finish with the toilet. (2-3 minutes)
Now I do a quick spray on the floor, and depending on what your rug is like (or use a cheap washcloth), I just turn mine upside down and use it to quick wipe down the floor, then throw it in to be washed. (30 seconds)
Put fresh towels on the towel bar, and as a basket/tray liner. New scrubby in the shower, and new rag under the sink. (15 seconds)

Twice a month:
Wash the shower curtain liner with the towels

Once a month (20 minutes at most):
Wash the shower curtain with the towels
Clean the window treatments (a good dusting, shake or a vacuum) (1 minute)
Wash the floor and get in all the corners. (5 minutes)
Wash the counters and get in all the corners. (2 minutes)
Wash down the toilet and get in all the corners. (5 minutes)
Wipe down surfaces, cabinets, etc. (5 minutes)

2-4 times a year:
Take down the window treatments and wash them.

The best part about all of this is by "cleaning" for 25 seconds every day and 5 minutes 1-2 times a week the bathroom is always clean and never becomes a "gross" job to do. The once a month stuff actually goes faster on each additional bathroom because a lot of the time is in the setup (finding the bucket, filling it with hot water and soap). The daily and swap out towels things are intended to be very quick and don't have to be completely thorough, because the spot you miss today you can get tomorrow or 3 days from now. My timeframes are all approximate, I do things when they are needed and not on a really rigid schedule, if the floor needs a good washing sooner (especially during the summer) it might only be 2-3 weeks, but during the winter when we aren't outside getting all dirty it might be 5-6 weeks.

I hope this helps, the every day quick wipe down/scrub is really the key to all of this.

Where I need help is in the kitchen... I need a good routine like I have for the bathrooms...

Gloves for Cleaning

Aren't these just the cutest? I got the gloves and scrubber this week. I'm kind of a girlie girl in some aspects, I grow my nails long and try to keep them looking pretty. Well washing dishes and cleaning takes a toll on them, so I have plain old yellow gloves. With all the chemicals used in cleaning nowadays I try to always wear gloves when cleaning around the house. As I'm needing new cleaning supplies, I'm replacing them with Method products. My yellow dishwashing gloves are ready to retire to other housecleaning, so I replaced them with these totally cute pink gloves from The Pampered Chef. I also got the little scrubby you can see on the side of the sink.

Gloves

I absolutely love these, especially the tall polkadot cuffs. Too girly girl?

Closet Done and Spring Cleaning Complete

I spent yesterday afternoon swapping out my seasonal clothes and reorganizing my closet. I pulled out a bunch of clothing for donating, and a handful that need buttons or rehemming to mend. Everything had gotten intermingled, so I separated out tops, jackets, pants, skirts and dresses again, then arranged them by color so I can quickly grab what I want in the morning. Hopefully, this will help speed things up in the mornings.

So, wanna see the results? I'll share them anyway!

So much prettier! I've gone through quite a few areas of my home in my Spring Cleaning binge, and I feel like I can call this year's Spring Cleaning complete! Yay!

Spring Cleaning - Tips

Well since I'm almost done with my spring cleaning, I thought I'd share a few of my tips to make it easier.

  1. For cleaning I have a pack of 20 cheap washclothes in 5 different colors, I use a different color for floors, counters & sinks, bathrooms, walls and windows, woods. Since I use different cleaners for each of these areas I know I can just grab a rag in that color and not worry about it.
  2. To wipe down the walls, I just stick a washcloth on my swiffer, I use it dry on flat paint and wallpaper and damp on semi-gloss.
  3. I spray everything down in one bathroom, go to the next and spray it all down, by the time I'm done spraying, the first is ready to be wiped down, and then I go wipe down the second. I let the sprays soak a bit, letting them do their job and make it easier for me. I do the same thing in the kitchen, clear all the counters, spray them all in a clockwise direction, go back and wipe them off in a clockwise direction.
  4. I have a cleaning caddy that I keep everything in so it's easy to move throughout the room and not have to constantly have to stop and start to go find different cleaning supplies. If you don't have a caddy, load up a bucket or dishpan or a basket lined with a plastic bag.
  5. I keep 2 bins and a trash bag with me as I go throughout the house and anything that doesn't belong in the room it's in goes in 1 bin, anything I'm purging goes in the other. When I get to the room it belongs in, it gets put away. When I'm all done I go through and put everything left in the put away where it belongs. The purge bin gets distributed to it's rightful locations, whether to a person I think might want it or Goodwill.
  6. I start in the least used rooms, and work my way to the most used rooms. You'll get more rooms done in a smaller time frame, so it'll keep you motivated to keep going.  Plus, it'll keep you from tracking a lot of stuff into the lesser used rooms.  It also seems to be the most efficient way to getting the items from the bins put away. (I seem to be collecting a lot of family room/kitchen items throughout the house, so leaving those rooms until last makes the most sense to me.)
  7. I work clockwise through each room working from the top to the bottom and the outside to the middle. This makes sure I don't miss anything and I get through the room in an efficient manner.

Spring Flowers

Every year after going through a mad rush of cleaning in the spring, I treat myself to flowers... lots and lots of flowers. I fill a vase for just about every room and take it all in for a while.

When I was younger my bedroom was always a disaster area. Once on a rare occassion when I actually spent time and got it all clean, my dad brought me home a bouquet of roses for my dresser. It was motivation to keep it all clean and beautiful forever at least for a little while. When I put the flowers around the house at the end of Spring Cleaning I always think back to that.

In the last few years I've become partial to yellow flowers for the house in the spring. Yellow tulips preferably... They just seem so cheerful, which is perfect after a long winter. The flowers in my garden won't bloom for at least another 3-4 weeks, so I'm going to stop on my way home today and get myself a little treat for now.

Treat yourself to a little something special!
