I have a question and I'd LOVE it if you would please help me with an answer.
I've been back in Grand Forks for 6, count them, 6 years... and except for 1 person (love ya Becca!), all of my friends in Grand Forks are people I'm related to through marriage or met at work. I love my friends I really do! I don't want to replace them, however, I would like to meet new people in the area. So, here's my question:
I know you don't live here, but if I lived there and was going to meet you and hit it off right away and become fabulous friends, how/where would I find you?
My reasoning is the type of people that read my blog are the same type of people that I want to hang out and create general mayhem with. Yes, I ended the sentence with a preposition... there is probably a better way to phrase it, but well, it's not coming to mind. I consider you friends already, but with the price of gas I can't start roadtripping all over creation to see a movie!
at a cooking class, i would suspect. or a class that has to do with art, visiting museums, all the farmer's markets in the area, something like that.
ReplyDeleteI went through the same thing when we moved here October 2006 from cross country. It took me a while, but I eventually signed up for a stained glass class at the contemporary center and found women of similar interests and one of them invited me to join a book club where I met other women. A woman from church found out I quilted and introduced me to some quilters and so on.
ReplyDeleteHere I am......
ReplyDelete.... though after Tamy's answer, I may have misunderstood the question.
I need to start taking classes in things I enjoy. I love cooking, painting and such, but I've never taken a class or really done any of those activities socially. If any of you were at a museum or a farmer's market would you be open to someone approaching you just to make small talk?
ReplyDeleteI love reading, but you'll rarely find me in a book store or library. I usually research and buy books online. I do go to Michael's for painting supplies, but I'm usually the only person in those aisles, and I'm always worried that people will think I'm a freak if I just try to start up a random conversation.
Monique: Different interpretations... your post is full of great examples of exactly why I asked the question. All great reasons why I consider you my friend! Now I just need a teleporter so we can hang out... :)
After Monique's answer I see the interpretations. I'll go in thirds on the teleporter?
ReplyDeleteyeah that's where my gas comment came in...
ReplyDeleteYou probably wouldn't find me. I'm not out among people much. The most I do is go on walks...
ReplyDeleteThat's the beauty of the internet though, you aren't limited to people in your town that you would run into on a regular basis.
ReplyDeleteMarf- She would find you hiking and riding too. Plus you gotta restock on mountain dew at some point. You'd be out then....
ReplyDelete*laugh* yeah, he's not as much as a hermit as thinks he is... He has to go outside to take pics...
ReplyDeleteYeah, that too....
ReplyDelete...I don't talk to anyone though.
ReplyDeleteDo you growl at people?
ReplyDeletelol No. But the most I ever do is smile and say "hi". Half of the time it's ignored, and the other half I get a strange look.
ReplyDeleteOk, occasionally I'll get a "hi" back.
See....
ReplyDeleteOh man... I always say hi... or hi back... people tend to ssay hi back around here though... we went camping this weekend and a random guy just stopped by our site to chat... turns out he's from hubby's hometown... you never know...
ReplyDeleteYeah, we're friendly here too...
ReplyDeletePeople are good about waving if you do something courteous on the road. Or do the country wave as I call it, where you tip the hand from the steering wheel in a partial acknowledgment.
That would be very weird having someone just come up to your camp. We had a guy stop by once when we were having a yard sale before moving to Houston.
He seemed innocent enough until he started asking me if I had ever considered doing adult films, and gave me a card. It was weird, but even weirder is that he hung around to the point that we acted like he was invisible.
Must have been his plan, at the end of the day we were $200.00 short and I really think he used the annoyance so we would ignore him and he could rip us off. Might be way off, but that's what your camping mention brought to mind.
At the local crafty store, or walking on the trails or in a park. Otherwise, I don't get out much!
ReplyDeleteWho says we don't live here?! :)
ReplyDeleteMonique: That's just beyond creepy!
ReplyDeleteKim: I can relate, more than I thought I would as I've been contemplating this question...
Coffee Guy: The majority of my readers don't... :) Actually Crazy Daisy and mmichele are close-ish (within a couple of hours)... and yeah you are in town, but I'm guessing it's probably your first visit ;)
ReplyDeleteIt was.
ReplyDeleteDid he buy anything? or just leer at you all day?
ReplyDeleteI honestly don't remember. I just remember that he was big guy in faded over-alls and a do-rag.
ReplyDelete*laugh* I was envisioning a Leisure Suit Larry type...
ReplyDeletehow funny
ReplyDeleteSeeing as I do live in town, and around the corner from you, and have been here for 11 years (got you beat, hee hee!)... let me say that our wedding was very small since I also only knew family and co-workers, and not much family here at all. So there were about 50 people all together, which isn't bad when you consider that Wayne and I worked TOGETHER so all of our friends were mutual anyway! So. Other places... church... hmmm... through coworkers at outside functions... We have lots of friends from the lake- our camper neighbors. Having kids makes it a little easier because then we get to know their friends' parents. Since we KNOW that will happen for you soon, you have that to look forward to! :) And I AM the freak that talks to random people in stores. Drives the kids nuts!
