The Revival of Common Courtesy {2}

Tamy over at 3 Sides Of Crazy has started a weekly feature to share common courtesy and etiquette tips. Each week has a different theme, this week is Being The Perfect Guest.

She asks, "What do you do special for your hostess?"

What do you do? For dinners, I always offer to bring a dish, appetizer, or dessert. When staying overnight, I always bring a hostess gift that reflects the likes or personality of my host and/or hostess. I also assist with minor chores, setting the table, clearing the table and dishes and if staying for a while, treat them to a dinner out as a thank you. Tidy up after myself, so as not to make things more difficult for my host and/or hostess. I think I just try to make an effort to be as gracious as possible.

My favorite gifts to bring are wine (if they drink alcohol), flowers or french-milled unscented soaps.

  1. You are the perfect guest! What more could a hostess ask for? Thanks for participating. I do appreciate it especially since I know how busy your schedule is.

  3. Thanks Tamy. Just 2 more weeks ;)

    Erin: Definitely agree, even if my host and/or hostess don't want me to bring anything for dinner I'll bring them a bottle of wine or something special to enjoy later.

  6. Ooo, what I do is I bumble around awkwardly! I ask if I can bring anything, instead of remembering that really the only thing I should offer to bring is dessert. Then I offer to help, but I make a mess of things because I don't know what I'm doing. Then I bring a bottle of wine to a non-drinking house, or a box of scented soaps to someone allergic to fragrances. Then I help clear, and I drop a plate and break it.

    Sigh.

  7. Kristen: I'm sure you are more gracious than that ;) I've brought wine to non-drinkers before, ooooops. Now I check first. My sister-in-law has a thing for fragrances, but everyone likes something different, so I stick with unscented. People can always use soap, or regift it :)

  8. Oh!

    Come and be our guest! Winnipeg is a great city to visit if you are craving the symphony or ballet or great theatre in the middle of winter!
